I don't understand it. Why is it necessary for people to only say good things?

I've been reading some issues on the nakedparts community...basically, a couple of guys were being jerks, possibly intentionally, and making not-so-nice remarks about some posts.

But then everyone gets so defensive and the common refrain is "if you don't have anything nice to say, don't say anything." Why?? Can you not handle someone's negative opinion? Does it bother you so much that you would rather it not be there at all than laught it off because there's no reason for it to affect you?

Perhaps the reason is that we all like compliments, and we grow to use them as evidence of our own self-worth, but if we get negatvie comments, then we do the same because of the nature of how we are. Or something like that. I guess what I mean is, people shouldn't have to hold their tongues just because they aren't going to say something flattering. You should just let it roll off your back because as Baz Luhrmann says "Remember compliments you receive....forget the insults".
