some of the best have done so

for instance, user #1 and head ljgod bradfitz

myself, i do it to gain access to the different order that the friends' view uses versus the regular view. that only matters if you do a lot of back-entry or advance entry, yet for certain reasons don't want to use the back-dating checkbox

one other instance of this might be a better illustration than my own weird timestamp habits: a band set us a livejournal to communicate band-related news such as band engagements to band members. the recent activity view was where band members went to see the future engagements according to date, listed most future on back. so for example, if a month ago they got an engagement for the 4th of july and as yet had not made any plans for any date beyond that, then the regular journal view would have 7/4/2001 at the top. meanwhile, listing their own self as friend, the band members knew to go to the friends' page for the most recently entered news. so if last week they got an engagement for 6/30/2001, and if that was the most recent new action that band members needed to be alerted to, then the friends' view would display that at the top, easier to alert the band members to the new date, although on the regular page that 6/30 entry would display below the 7/4 one

there are numerous other good solid reasons any particular user might want to list themself as friend, mostly having to do with similar sorts of circumstances: the user has a particular purpose they are using their livejournal for that is not completely served by the main journal view, and some of the extra features of livejournal make it possible to achieve their desired result via the friends' view
