Grammar and Lord of the Rings
Today's post is going to be interactive. i.e. I'm going to talk about something, then ask for your take on the same question.

The question being: What would you do if you won the lottery? I'm talking specific stuff here. Lets say the jackpot is circa $80 million. I'm not going to get into major specifics on dollar amounts, but lets say you end up with $45 mil of that lump sum (supposedly the interest earned on that over 20 years is pretty high). What would you do with that money, if you won it today?

First, I'd buy that house that Melissa wants. I think its in the $1.5 mil range, right? I'd buy it for her so she wouldn't drag me over to look at it every time we go out walking. Then I'd furnish it for her with whatever she wanted.

I would pay for Michelle to go back to school. I know she wants to but can't afford it. She could quit her job she isn't happy at too, I would help her out so she could be happier. And help her move to wherever she wants. Trips to Italy? No problem! :)

I would pay back my parents the money they have spent on me to not get too far with school yet. I owe them that much.

I would definitely get rid of my dumbass car, but I'm not sure what I would get. I'm thinking a mid-size truck, like a Dakota, and like a BMW convertible. Yeah, that sounds nice. Yes, I would get more than one car. I think I could afford it.

I'd leave Sacramento, thats for sure. Oooh, idea! Buy a house in Seattle, and then a place like somewhere in Europe....or two. Then I could go to like every metal tour/festival EVER. And I'd have a place to stay. How about Sweden and Greece. Sure, sounds good. The houses would be large enough to accomodate friends who wanted to stay for months at a time, for any reason. I would let my friends stay there all the time when I'm not around. Because I'm cool like that.

There are some projects I'd want to do. One would be a combination metal record shop/recording studio/live music venue. It wouldn't quite be as amusingly macabre as Euronymous' shop in Norway, but still a purely metal shop. CDs, tapes, videos, etc. All metal, big names and underground releases. They just don't exist. The recording studio I would want to help out local bands who didn't have the funds for recording but had the talent. I'd be very philanthropic with my money. And of course, the live venue. The way I want it to be. A good place where the metal tours would want to stop. Also, for local bands to get some time playing in front of live audiences. Would I limit it to just metal acts? Doubtful, if only because I'd want it to be used more than once a month, heh.

I would want to open something that was similar to our Teen Center back in Elk Grove, only geared more toward the generation of computer geeks. Having like two dozen top of the line systems all networked together locally for CS playing, stuff like that. Basically the computer section of a LAN cafe. Staff on-site technicians and such to keep them working well. I'd also have like a plasma screen TV or hell, 2 hooked to DVD players and surround sound, with the latest game systems (i.e. PS2 and such) so the kids could just kick back and watch movies if they weren't playing on the computer.

Not sure who still plays arcade games....probably wouldn't have those. Probably air hockey and foosball though. I was trying to figure out how to break even on it, without making a profit. Would have to charge for something. Probably food, but cheap. Sodas and the like. Or something else, not sure. But mostly I'd want to have a place junior high/high school kids could go and hang out.

Hrm. I'd also like to start up a parody website, a real one that had a staff churning out stuff who knew what they were doing. Maintain that.

Those are the main projects. Of course I'd buy all kinds of other shit. But thats the specifics I've actually thought out.

How about you?

1. Call my financial advisor (ok, my mother's financial advisor, but he also helps me out when I have investment options from my employer). I'd do whatever he said was best - take the lump sum or the yearly payouts. Either way, I have things set up so that all important payments (house, services, etc) are taken out, and then I get a monthly allowance, because I know how bad I am with money.

2. Mom gets a house. Wherever she wants. Along with that, I'd have a maid service paid to clean once a week, and a lawn service as well.

3. I get a house. I've always said nothing fancy before, but I would need something large just to hold my interests. I'd need a room where I could display my action figure collection (which would definitely grow), a place for my computer system... and what a system I'd have, a room for my tv / music system, a room to store my comic collection, a gaming room, and of course at least 1 extra guest room.

4. After all these things are set in motion, I start spending. I think the first thing would be paying for my friend Ron and I to go to Europe and follow the singer Fish around on his Euro tour, since we've never been able to see him in the states.

5. I'd open up some sort of business. I don't really know what. Something that had just enough of an audience to pay operating costs and keep itself open, like a gaming store.

1) I'd buy myself a house

2) Buy a couple cars (I like cars)

3) Pay for my sister's college tutition

4) Give money to my parents, so my dad can still retire when he planned to (paying for sister's college would help that, but so would helping them build their house) and to pay back for classes I've failed

5) Buy 2 or 3 of my roommates new cars, since their cars and dying and they're always bitching about it

6) Throw a big ass party and invite a lot of people

Yearly payouts. That way, if I screw up one year, I have the next year to get back up. Get in touch with the cool financial kid that listens to dropkick, because he was rad.

Set up college accounts for myself and my sister. Big ones. Also including money for a car when she turns 16, trips, things she wants, within reason. Art school.

Fix my car. Buy stickers for it. And an air conditioner.

Move out and take my sister. Get a rad place near the beach. Become her legal guardian.

Send a roll of stamps to my mom.
Buy a massive copy machine for zine stuff.
Cooking lessons.
Buy my grandmother a cell phone with unlimited minutes. Make sure she's taken care of. Buy grampa and Norma a rad computer.

Eventually start a mall like thing, kind of a teen center, a learning place, with positive activities. Independent theatre, computers, art room, vegetarian cafe with lots of teas, mini copy shop, huge library, music room, with lessons for kids who want them. A big calm room for kids to just relax. Provide a meeting place for groups.. rg, saf, ara, whatever, as long as it is positive. Host shows. Get Bratmobile to play first, with Haggard and Evergreen Terrace.

Branch it out into becoming a group home, a shelter mostly for queer youth.

Road trip all over the US. Hook up with rad kids so we have places to stay, people, conversation. Go and stay whenever we wanted. Go to portland zine fest and beantown zinetown.

More. but must be off. xo.

I would clear everyone's debts.

I would fund research into a cure for autism.

I would buy a big house, big enough for my kids & my best friends.

I would leave my other half.

I would run off to Athens, Ga & throw myself on the mercy of Michael Stipe.

I would give Mr Big a run for his money......

.....and I would mail plane tickets to all my cyberchums, so we could all meet for once!!!
