Grammar and Lord of the Rings
On October 13th, 2000 (Friday the 13th as it turned out), I had taken a call from my family that one of our oldest family friends was in the hospital, it was serious, and the doctors didn't know what was wrong with him. This man was my best friend's father, and my Scoutmaster for 6 years. It was a good thing that I had skipped out on Stats that day....because I don't want to think of the alternative. Since I was home (and nobody ever did question why) I was able to hear the news right away. I called work, fighting the sobs, to tell them I wouldn't be in. I can't remember feeling that sad since my grandpa died of cancer in '93.

I had to call the hospital to find out where the family was, and soon after I was on the highway to Roseville. I think I was about half way there when I noticed the shirt I was wearing. It happens to be the shirt I am wearing today, which is why I thought of this. Anyway, when I looked down, I saw the logo of one of my favorite bands: Death. It was like a sudden blast of cold air that hit me then; there was no way I could show up to a hospital where a friend lay suffering with "Death" emblazoned across my chest. I turned around at the first offramp and drove back to change.

As I said, it was a good thing that I skipped class that morning. Otherwise I might not have made it in time. Ed died of lymphoma at 7:30 pm. I was in the waiting room when it happened.

Never again do I want to feel so terrible.
