Tonight in film class we watched "The Last Seduction", a "Neo Noir" film. Linda Fiorentino played a pretty amazing bitch on wheels. Like, evil and out for herself to the max. But that's not what I want to talk about. I want to talk about the guy she takes for a ride, poor little countryfied Mike (played by Peter Berg). This guy gets played twice. The first one is something we don't find out until the end of the film, so in the interest of non spoilers, the rest is going behind lj-cut.

Mike left his little boonie town when he was a youngin to find excitement in big bad Buffalo (his hometown is some little podunk in NY). He married the first girl that came along out of loneliness. Then divorced her super quick after realizing it was a mistake. Turns out later that this girl was in fact a guy. Not sure why they threw that in, but that's how it went down.

So then, after coming back, he gets roped into this scheme by Linda Fiorentino's character, who is on the run from her husband over some prescription drug money (or something). Poor guy never knew what hit him. He's just a lonely guy trying to turn his life around and gets trapped in her web. One of the best lines is when she's trying to convince him to kill this guy because of her warped idea of commitment and being equals in a relationship - she killed a guy, so he has to in order to even it up. She says "if you loved me you'd do it". It was kinda scary. The idea that a guy would fall for that line, even if it means murder. (It took more convincing, and in the end he couldn't go through with it, FYI).

What made me think is that I could be that guy. Poor lonely small town boy who gets conned. Isn't that optimistic? I'd like to think I wouldn't agree to kill someone for a girl, but in general terms, I'm pretty susceptible to that kind of thing. Why wouldn't I be? It worries me. :(
