I was psyched for this show as soon as I heard about it, for the following reason: there is no opening band on this tour. Its called "An Evening with Dream Theater", and its an entire show with just them. They play so long that they actually have a scheduled intermission halfway through. Discounting that, and the time it took to start, they came in at just a shade under 3 hours of playing time. 3 HOURS!! They covered stuff from all throughout their career, but unfortunately I only knew about half of it since I don't own a few. I definitely need to change that.

Highlights:
*Right before the intermission, at the end of a song, the guitar player and the keyboardist engaged in a duel of sorts, a one-up contest that got progressively more badass.
*Before finishing the last encore song, they plopped into the bridge section of "Master of Puppets" and continued the song almost up until the very end. It goes without saying that the song could not be covered any better.
*Watching Mike Portnoy on his new kit. The man had THREE bass drums on that thing. But there is a point.

Since I had never been to the Warfield before, I didn't realize what floor tickets would encompass. I figured it would closest to the band. In theory, it was. But I had to stand up for about 3 1/2 hours straight. It was painful, and tiring. Also, I'm not sure where people park in San Francisco. Once we got into the city, we found the venue but had no place to park, so we went around again and paid $8 for a lot spot, just because it was there and I didn't want to wait any longer. At least I had someone watching over my ass car.

And for the first time, I actually had someone go with me to see a show in SF. Its a good thing. But I hate driving home in the rain at midnight. Sux0r.
