Back in the days of Boy Scouts, I was known affectionately as "Bug Man". It was because of my intense fascination with bugs. At the first summer camp I went to, I met this counselor named Bill who did some of the nature merit badges. I didn't actually earn any, but I learned some stuff. At the end of the week, I watched as he mounted a Long-horn beetle in a glass casing, tape it up, and give it to me. I had that damn beetle up until I moved after high school.

The reason I mention this is because this week has been brought back those memories. When I was leaving work yesterday, walking out of the building, I saw something move out of the corner of my eye, on the ground. I figured it was probably a leaf, but I looked - not a leaf. It was a big, tan, praying mantis! I haven't seen a mantis for quite some time, so I stooped to check it out. I coaxed it onto the magazine I had with me, and picked it up. A woman with some kids was walking by, and they all stopped to look at it. It was really a good size. Then one of our network admins came out as well. Eventually, I went over to put it into one of the bushes, but the darn thing wouldn't leave my magazine. When I tried to nudge it, it like, reared up like it wanted to fight. :) Finally it got off.

Today, coming home at noon, I saw an inchworm on the sidewalk leading from the parking lot to my apartment. Inchworms rule. I didn't pick it up or anything, I just watched it for a few seconds as it moved along briskly.

Insects so interest me.

I nearly failed my grade 12 biology assignment where I had to mount insects and class them. I made my dad do it, because I didn't want to touch them. I don't really understand why I was so scared... I think my reasoning at that time was that their souls might haunt me if I touched them.

However, the live ones, if separated from me by an impenetrable barrier, are cool. :)
